I wrote this as kind of a challenge my friend presented to me where she basically ordered me to write a story where Mark does something for Lexie that you would never think of him doing and immediately, I imagined him watching a movie with her that he would never watch. This is one of those vignettes where my brain was just babbling so it definitely isn't the best thing in the world. I hope some of you like it nonetheless. Thank you!
Mark can’t help but frown when he steps out of the bathroom, a cloud of steam billowing out behind him, and he looks at the television, knotting the white towel low on his hips. Lexie is sitting on the couch, her eyes focused intently on the screen, some old movie playing on Turner Classic Movies. She doesn’t even glance in his direction as he comes and stands next to the couch.
“What is this?” He asks.
Lexie turns her head slowly to stare up at him. “What is this?” She echoes in complete disbelief. “Mark, this is Gone With the Wind. How can you not know Gone With the Wind?”
“Very easily. I have a penis,” he replies and she rolls her eyes before looking back at the television.
“This is one of my favorite movies. I could probably watch it on an endless loop,” she says, settling back into the couch, hugging one of the pillows to her chest.
“Please don’t,” he says as he goes to the dresser and dropping the towel, he opens one of the drawers and pulls out a pair of boxer shorts to tug on. “So this is what you are going to do on your day off? Watch some movie?”
“Yes,” Lexie answers without pause but she sounds distracting, her eyes not even seeming to blink as she keeps her full attention on the television screen. “You know you would probably like this movie. Rhett Butler is kind of a badass.”
“How long is this thing?” He asks, now yanking on a pair of blue jeans.
“Almost four hours,” she responds casually with a nonchalant shrug.
He turns to her, staring. “I’m sorry. What now?”
“Shhhh,” she orders, putting a finger to her lips. “It’s just started and Scarlett is about to tell Ashley that she loves him but Rhett is in the same room and overhears the whole thing.”
He sighs heavily and then yanks on a long-sleeve tee-shirt. “I’m not staying in here for four hours while you watch this.”
“You could watch it with me.”
He smirks, shaking his head. “There is no way in hell that I’m watching this. I’m going to order you popcorn from room service but then I’m getting out of here.”
He sits down next to her on the couch and picking up the phone on the end table next to him, he orders the popcorn with the extra butter that he knows Lexie loves to eat whenever they are watching a movie.
“You really won’t watch this with me?” She asks once he hangs up the phone.
“This looks like it would be torture,” he answers and then smirks when she rolls her eyes, looking back at the television screen. He looks at her for a moment and then looks towards the screen as well. “Who’s that?” He asks with a heavy sigh.
Lexie smiles. “That’s Melanie Hamilton. She is sweet and almost meek but she always supports Scarlett and stands by her. She is going to marry Ashley Wilkes and Ashley loves her but Scarlett loves Ashley so naturally, Scarlett is jealous of Melanie and practically hates her.”
“Who’s that?” He asks, finding himself settling back into the couch, as a blonde-haired man steps into the scene.
“That’s Ashley? The guy all these girls want?” Mark asks incredulously. “He looks like a complete priss,” he concludes and Lexie laughs.
“Whoa,” Mark says, leaning forward, his eyes glued to the screen as he chews on a mouthful of popcorn. “Scarlett marries Frank? But her sister was supposed to marry him.”
Lexie shrugs. “Scarlett doesn’t care. She needs the money to rebuild Tara.”
“Damn, she’s got balls,” he comments and then adds, “I like her.”
“I knew you would,” Lexie smiles.
“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”
Mark nods his head approvingly as he watches Rhett storm from the house and Scarlett crumbles with despair. “About fucking time, Rhett,” he says and Lexie can’t help but laugh at him. “What?” He asks, looking at her.
Lexie shakes her head. “I thought you said that this would be torture to watch.”
Mark is reclining on the couch with his feet propped up on the coffee table in front of him and Lexie has draped her legs across his lap, his hands rubbing them as they watch the last few minutes of the movie.
“It wasn’t that bad,” he begrudgingly admits. “You are right. Rhett Butler is kind of a badass. Scarlett definitely doesn’t deserve him.”
“When I was little and my mom and I would watch this movie, I always imagined myself ending up with a man just like Rhett Butler,” Lexie admits, almost embarrassed to be saying that out loud. “I thought he was the perfect man.”
Mark looks at her though, a slight frown on his face. “I’m not perfect.”
She smiles at him and then sitting up, she slips her arms around his shoulders, she gives him a soft kiss on the lips. “You are to me,” she says and he can’t help but roll his eyes at that, making her laugh softly again. “You do remind me of Rhett though. The way he kisses Scarlett… that’s how you kiss me. You kiss me like you love me.”
Mark stares at her, not sure what to say. They’ve been together for a few months already but he doesn’t know yet if he loves her. He could see himself, one day, falling in love with her but he isn’t sure they are at that point yet. He can see it sometimes in the way Lexie looks at him and whenever she opens her mouth, he is expecting her to tell him that she loves him but Mark doesn’t know if he can say the words back to her. There are no other three words that can change everything the instant they are spoken like I love you can.
Lexie seems to read his mind and gives him another soft kiss, pulling away a moment later with a faint smile. “Thank you for watching it with me. Tomorrow, we can watch your favorite movie.”
She untangles herself from him and gets up from the couch, stretching her body as she begins walking to the bathroom.
“Lex,” Mark says before he can stop himself and she turns to look at him, the same faint smile across her lips. And he stares at her for a moment, having no idea what he wants to say because right then, the only words on his mind are those three damn words that he knows he isn’t ready to say. He clears his throat. “I’m gonna order us some dinner and then… maybe we can watch it again.”
A bright, happy smile bursts across Lexie’s face and she goes back to him, leaning down and kissing him firmly on the lips.
